How to Make Your Home Dynamic During the Holidays

Thursday, November 26th, 2009

When most people think of seasonal decorations they visualize ornaments, ceramic winter villages, and elaborate lights. Thus leaving out a formidable contender for strongest impact of all the holiday additions in ones home, fragrance. To walk into a house and inhale an aroma so enticing that you are certain the homeowner is baking, or perhaps making cinnamon cider is exquisite.

While glancing at the covers of home décor magazines during the holidays, you can almost sense that the place being photographed is filled with an appealing scent. Therefore, to make your place as dynamic, include an assortment of candles throughout it. And if you are vying for a position as homemaker of the year, you may even consider making the candles yourself. Christmas cookie, balsam and cider, eggnog, fresh baked bread are sure fragrance winners, and quite memorable to boot.

Interior Design Magazine Lights the Way

One of the easiest ways to add a dramatic flair to a living space is through the use of lighting. The level, and angle of the light will aid you in emphasizing an object, setting a mood and, or create a focal point. In addition to all of those benefits, the lighting fixture itself can make a grand statement, and in some cases be the feature of a design.

As such, one of my favourite places to find amazing lighting products is the Interior Design Magazine. This is a wonderful tool for locating cutting edge items, especially when they are featured in their new products section. Here you can find the unimaginable, the uber creative, the piece that not only will no one you know have, but no one you know will probably have ever seen. This is one of the sources that will inspire one to take risks, and think outside the box.

A Parting Gift that is Always Sweet

Friday, November 20th, 2009

When you are hosting a gathering in your home around the holidays, it is always a lovely touch to send your guests home with a little treat. In cases where you are not certain of the religious orientation of your invitees, it is best to stick with a goodie that is nondenominational. I find that one of the best ways to do this, and keep costs to a minimum is to bake cookies.

Of course it is always nice to keep a wintery feel to the item, and thus interjecting the spirit of celebration. Therefore, I tend to use a great deal of metallic sprinkles and confectioners sugar on top. There are some very inventive and beautiful cookies to be made. I recommend doing a quick search, and then adding special touch of your own to the existing recipe. Many of the photos are not only inspiring, but will have your mouth watering.

Architectural Digest Shows Us Another Side of Winter

Tuesday, November 17th, 2009

Last year at this time, Architectural Digest did a cover story on Donna Karan’s Family Retreat in the British West Indies. It seemed like a surprising selection considering the season, and how many of us are tied up in thoughts of a white Christmas and such. But considering the fact that I am still thinking about the exquisite photos of her al fresco design this winter must mean they knew what they were doing.

Luckily, the full display of the photos from the article can still be obtained on the Architectural Digest website. What I appreciated most about the design was how the furniture inside flowed coherently with that placed outside. Wood consistently supported the cushioned seating, and the fabrics were reminiscent throughout. The predominant colour a shade of honey that glistened in the sunlight and glowed in the abode. Such symmetry is enviable, and the harmony much desired in any home.
