The Recipe for Getting Mix and Match Bedding Perfect

Wednesday, January 4th, 2012

For years I have been trying to get that mix and match bedding down pat. I guess it was back in the early nineties when I fell in love with the way designer Ralph Lauren criss crossed his patterned, and solid bedding pieces to create inviting cloth islands for sleep. It was the way he masterfully intermingled florals with gingham, and checks with animal prints that absolutely had me spellbound.

What’s more was that he made it look so darn easy to achieve. Alas, without wanting to spring for his rather pricey linens in every bedroom in the homes I have since lived in, I set out to replicate this style. What I ended up with was more reminiscent of a table at a garage sale the first go round, and something simply gone wrong on the second. Needless to say there were multiple returns to the local shops, and a great deal of frustration on my behalf.

But, I persevered and ultimately came up with the following recipe for getting the look I love. The equation consists of this: pick on tone from the central pattern of your choice (I find it best to have that as the comforter or duvet cover) and ensure that all of the other articles from the pillow cases to the sheets have it also. The last touch is to place a blanket at the foot of the bed in that precise tone to unify the set.

Tips For Finding That Perfect Couch Worthy of Commitment

Thursday, December 8th, 2011

Large household items such as couches can cause great amounts of stress to those trying to determine which to buy. I often hear people say that they want something that is comfortable, stylish, and will not be dated in the next couple of years. While the list is a common one, many still find this search to be a painful one. To avoid it becoming that, there are tips to follow that will safeguard you from settling upon something that only partially meets your sofa wishlist.

Here are a few things to look for if you are seeking the above things in a new sofa. Tufted and cushionless can be a combination in this area, just make sure it is deep enough to be comfortable. The lack of stylized cushions keeps such a piece of furniture from being to trendy, but still sleek enough to be fashionable. If you can locate that, and find no fuss arms and feet, then you are in business, and you should just stop the search. No fuss meaning not elaborate, super sized, or too detailed.

Tuesday, July 26th, 2011

When you tackle a project such as renovating, or remodelling the kitchen, bedrooms, or bathrooms in your home you need not embark on it all by your lonesome. Trying to decide between different styles, based upon what already exists in your home, or the space you have to work with can be a difficult thing to try and determine single-handedly. And should you have a member of your family that has special needs, this job can prove to be even more challenging. Therefore, any advice, or assistance could play out to be essential.

While many people realise you can get professional assistance in creating the design for these spaces in your house, they do not all know that this help can be found as a free service. If you choose a company that has several locations you can pick the one most convenient for you to hold this conference. If you organise the meeting via the internet you and can have the date and time all established within forty-eight hours of your submission of the request. If you are more eager to get things underway, then you can sometimes get in to a store for an appointment within forty-eight hours if you call directly.

When you do meet with a representative to review exactly what your wants and needs are you should find that you leave with a better understanding of the products available. Take for example the scenario in which the person making over the bathroom is doing so to make it more suitable for an aged relative to bathe or shower. The agent should be able to aid you in identifying whether a shower stool or an adjustable bath seat board might be most suitable. Or, they could point out that one raised toilet seat will be preferable to another for that individual.

Then, they can of course also guide you to make selections that will be most attractive, most practical, or most financially feasible. One of these may loom stronger than the others, or maybe you want your bathroom suites to be fetching, sensible and within a certain budget, so there is a triple goal in place. Going it alone to achieve that may feel overwhelming, but with the support of the staff from the company you will undoubtedly meet these objectives with less work on your behalf. And finally, if you can get free help in any aspect of home improvement jobs, take it.

Why Dining Tables and Chairs are Best When They Come in Sets

Tuesday, June 7th, 2011

Back when I was just starting out on my own as an adult I had limited finances to decorate my flat. I suppose luck was on my side with the fact that the flat was the size of a breadbox, and thus there was no need for a ton of furniture. But, I was determined for my very first place to look dignified and mature, or at least to look like what I believed then was dignified and mature. I started with a mix and match dining table and chairs, and a minuscule leather couch because that was all I could afford.

The chairs I discovered at the Camden Market, and repainted them myself a hodge podge of metallic colours. Apparently, back then, in my opinion, anything that shined was a sign of being expensive. Oh, and I so desperately did not want to look like I was living pay check to pay check, even though the reality of it was that I was doing just that for years.

As for the table, well I believe it was a floor sample at a store where I could have never been able to spring for full price. The mere fact that it was made entirely of glass in itself should not have deterred me. But an unfortunate incident when I went to move it several years later showed me that glass must be shown respect, even by big burly boyfriends who may or may not be in a rush to get in front of the telley for the football game.

Then there was the couch. Well, as a matter of fact, the couch was beautiful. I got it at a half off sale because it was ridiculously small. It was a buttery creamy leather, and it was finely crafted. Yet, its flaw was that it must have been intended for a Barbie doll, not including the company of her fair Ken. Yep, it was indeed that tiny, and so I rarely had repeat visitors, because seating on it was unbearably awkward.

What I learned from those first pieces of furniture was this. Unless you are very artistic, or have a real knack for putting dining chairs with a table that it does not specifically match, stick with dining sets. You will be comfortable in knowing they go perfectly together, you avoid any paint projects, and they can either be sold later or passed on to friends and family. Needless to say I couldn’t even give those hand painted chairs away when I wanted to upgrade. Oh yeah, and only get a couch made for one if you want to always sit by yourself, no matter how exquisite it looks.

A Homemade Decoration Tradition Lives On

Friday, February 11th, 2011

While many homes are decked out for holidays like Christmas and Easter my favourite to decorate for is by far Valentine’s Day. One reason is that when I was a small child my mother would do craft projects with me, and then hang the finished products all over our house, along with the ones from all the years before. When my dad got home after everything was up, he would go straight to the latest addition and rave about how wonderful my work was.

Thus, based upon that phenomenal childhood memory, I do the same with my kids. I spend a little time online searching for the perfect project for us to do all together and around the same time I start to put up the pieces that the kids have made over the years. Since Valentine’s is such a sweet, and homemade craft kind of event all of the items look perfect. My husband does his part by taking over the role my dad used to play just wonderfully, and it makes me love him a little bit more each year because of it.

A Properly Proportioned Kitchen Island is Best

Sunday, December 12th, 2010

Kitchen islands have never been more popular than they are right now. An island is a wonderful way to carry out the theme of a kitchen, create additional seating, add much needed storage, and give the chef more space to work when preparing meals. So, both stylish and efficient, that is asking a lot of one item, but what can we say it does all those jobs when designed properly.

To craft the perfect island for your kitchen space you should rely upon the established proportions of the room to guide you. This means that if the dimensions of the kitchen are long and narrow, then too should the shape of the island. While you may have something else in mind at the outset, take this tip to heart and follow the pre-existing layout, this ensures that you end up with a properly shaped island, and an overall attractive kitchen set up due to the balance of all of the countertops in the room.

Proper Preparation for Home Improvement Projects

Sunday, November 7th, 2010

You may think that when preparing to renovate, or build an extension that you have thought of everything necessary. But, as you will soon learn if this is your first experience with this sort of work, there is nearly always one more thing to be coordinated. And even for those who have gone through this before, it is very common for those involved in home improvement projects to forget the importance of organising a road sign hire.

Depending on the number of vehicles, machines and materials that will be involved in the work, it can be virtually invaluable to think to hire a couple of signs to help direct others away from the construction area. By alerting those driving in the direction of your home early on to the fact that the area they are approaching is not the best way for them to travel you may avoid an impending accident, or disaster. There are plenty of road signs to choose from, and they are relatively easy to put out, and retrieve as is prudent. Certainly it is your wish that everything run smoothly during this chaotic time, so take this additional step in order to put your mind at ease.

A Home Renovation Deserves a Television Upgrade

Monday, October 4th, 2010

I have been urging my parents to look into the new plasma and LCD tvs for a few months now. They still have a television that is built into some faux wooden cabinet. It has got to be at least twenty-five years old, and does nothing but stick out like a sore thumb in their living room.

They have been renovating the home that they have lived in for over thirty years, and the work is coming along well. Maybe I am not one to appreciate sentimentality, and this could be why they are so hesitant to part with that silly, massive television. I mean my brother and I did spend many wonderful Sunday evenings with the whole family in front of that big old thing.

But since the whole house has been updated, I believe they just might recognize that it is time to let go. Although I must admit, I think it was more of the discussions that my folks had with their grandkids, then it was those they had with me that began to sway them after all. As far as I am concerned, it just does not matter what the reason is for upgrading, as long as it happens.

The Avoidable Pitfall of Built in Wardrobes

Wednesday, June 16th, 2010

Built in wardrobes have long been admired, but out of reach due to high prices. The wonderful ease of simply closing the big doors to conceal everything is amazing. Plus, the many shelves, and drawers make organization much more achievable. And now the costs are coming down to reasonable levels, so their popularity will definitely rise.

However, there is one word of caution to be mentioned regarding these sensational additions. The built in closets need to be looked after, or you will end up with stains, scratches and caked on dirt. So, avoid the downfall of these wonders of carpentry by putting down shelf liners before you ever even put one single item into the unit. The paper can be found in any colour or pattern imaginable, and replaced when need be for very little cost.

This will save the wood, or laminate when liquids spill, such as perfume or nail polish. It will also protect it from the dirty soles of shoes, and their potentially scratchy heels. Plus, the standard where and tear will be minimal all because you took the time to put down some decorative paper.

To say that this simple task is worthwhile is an understatement of the highest degree. Just do it.
